Tartrazine or Yellow #4 or 5

This artificial colorant so common in many products is a petroleum derivative, used to give an intense yellow or green color when mixed with Blue #1. You can find it in:

  • Juices in sachets or soft drinks
  • Potato chips, cheetos, nachos
  • Jellies
  • Jams
  • Gummies and chewing gum
  • Colored candies
  • Soups and paella sauces
  • Some syrups or pharmaceuticals

What you didn’t know is that it is banned in Australia (previously also in Norway, Austria and Germany), because it is associated with:

  1. Allergic reactions (it is histamine releasing), asthma, dermatitis and urticaria.
  2. Attention deficit and hyperactivity syndrome in children (American Academy of Pediatrics).

However, in spite of all this, its use is allowed in the USA and Latin America with the exception that it must be written in CAPITAL LETTERS in the list of ingredients. In Europe it is mandatory to state: “May have negative effects on the activity and attention of children”.

You can find it as: Yellow #4, Yellow #5, Yellow #5 , Acid Yellow 23, E-102 or INS 102.
